Soothing Food for Teething Babies

My girl, Cara, is 10 months old. If I drop an ice cube in the kitchen, she pounces on it like a duck on a bug. She eagerly grabs for it, and if she can hang on long enough, wedges it between her sore gums or nibbles at it with her baby teeth. Before long, her hands are red with cold, she is sitting in a puddle, and she is frustrated by trying to handle the slippery piece of ice.

Most of Cara's baby food is made at home. I freeze it in ice cube trays so there is always some on hand. It dawned on me that if I cut a cube into chunks, she could 1) hold it more easily 2) maybe not get frost bite 3) eat food! It was a great success.

The most recent batch of baby food in my kitchen was made with apples and oatmeal. To make your own:

Core, peel, and chop 2 apples. I used one Granny Smith and on Gala.

Place chopped apple in a small saucepan.

Cover with water and/or apple juice.

Sprinkle in about 1/4 C rolled oats.

Simmer until apples are soft (around 30 minutes, depending on what kind).

Puree, then spoon into an ice cube tray and freeze. When completely frozen, transfer to a freezer bag.
